In late 2016, we began working with North Forward, a Toronto-based product design company, on a system to improve the lives and safety of operators in the mining industry. The goal of the project was to use technology to identify safety risks within mining sites with dramatically improved efficency.

Leveraging our games industry experience, we designed a simple trivia game system to collect responses from operators in the field. We hypothesized this format might increase user engagement - and found success. On average, over 90% of operators complete the entire set of twenty-one questions each day. During a month-long trial that we conducted at a major mining site, we collected ~2,800 data points, a feat that would have normally taken over seventy-one days using standard audit procedures.

Secret Mission was responsible for architecting, building, securing, and deploying the entire application. The software consists of a native iOS app, a backend system to collect and store operator responses, and finally a web-based dashboard that managers and decision-makers can use to visualize their site’s safety conditions in real-time.

Built with
  • Native iOS application (Swift)
  • Offline mode with reachability API to send data to the server
  • Backend application (Node + Express.js, MongoDB)
  • Reporting module to export daily Excel spreadsheets with comprehensive reports for a specified period
  • Responsive dashboard application (Angular.js, Bootstrap, Chart.js)
  • Automated Unit + UI Testing
